GETTING RID OF THE "SLAVE MENTALITY" (PART A)

A few days ago, I was watching a programme on television and there was this young teenage boy who was talking about PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria)-I hope I got that right-and making reference to NEPA (National Electrical Power Authority) which was it's former name, explaining that the days of NEPA were still better as it was tagged "the days of partial darkness". Then made up a really funny joke that actually means that PHCN, "as the name denotes, has come to put Nigeria in a state of total darkness...". You know, the little guy can't be blamed. It's because he has heard and seen that the situation of things will/may not/never change as corruption and injustice takes over the land. Everyone struggling for leadership, of which at the end of the day, they never get it right! I like the way a Yorùbá proverb illustrates it, "It is better never to be King, than to be a King that connot control the people". There's something battling everyone's minds!. Husbands vs wives. Red vs blue. Country vs country. Young vs Old. Your beliefs vs mine. We go from disagreement to outrage these days, which is why we've been wondering what we-you, us, everyone-can do to cool down this conflict, bring people together and look for a way to make the best of what we have.

Our country is blessed! They say it's "The Heart Of Africa", "...the largest black nation...". You know, they may be right! We just need to take a deeper look at the country itself and create possible solutions, rather than complaining all the time. Remember, it took the Israelites many years to reach the promise land because they were disobedient and complaining too much... They couldn't wait to reach the promise land, as a result, they wasted countless years trying to figure it all out.

If we believe in the term we often use, "Good People, Great Nation", then why do we not hope for a better tomorrow? If we do not believe that an individual can solve the crises then why vote for him? Why? Why? Why? But wait a minute! Pause! Let us search our hearts. We'll be fifty (50) in a few days, that means we've obtained liberty for about fifty years now... are we really independent? Are we really free? Hmmm? I know what you're thinking...

I know this may shock and confuse you a lil bit, but I think the problem we're facing right now is our mindset! We have what I'd simply put as the "Slave Mentality". For many years, many black men who lived in the United States have desired to rule. I'm sure a lot of us know Martin Luther King, at least he's a very good example. Many wanted to be president. To end slavery, racism and segregation. But only a few of them could only be bold enough to step forward and say "Yes we can!". This is because they were struggling with the battle of the mind. When you think you can do something, and you really have this really strong passion to accomplish it, then why lose hope when faced with a little challenge, when they are only meant to make you stronger? The slave mentality was the first thing President Obama was able to overcome. Having done this, it was easy for him to take the bold step which made him what he is today. (For further reading on what you can learn about how Obama successfully became president, visit http://www.pojuoyemade.com)

I've seen many visionary men and women who've come up with hope-inspiring solutions-to make their economies great and better and they succeeded. They didn't like the name's other nations called them. They took bold steps and changed things. They got rid of the slave mentality because they knew that this was a battle of the mind and also a limiting factor that drew them back from achieving their ultimate goals. They believe that there's power in the tongue and they cautioned themselves, said positive things and made an impact on their generations.

Here are a few things that can help you overcome these set backs.
1. Submit your heart to God; Allowing Him take total controll of your life and everything that concerns you. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6).
2. Get rid of the Slave Mentality; The power of thoughts and believes... They'll say, "If you do not believe that you have enough faith to move a stone, why try moving a mountain?" Believe in yourself and take a bold step. "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee." (Proverbs 23:7).
